Now this XYZ has been promoted to be a Domain Controller, not that it should make any difference whatsoever. This VM was created from the Azure marketplace image as mentioned before. In fact, why does Azure even want me to activate it in the first place? This is super frustrating and a real road blocker to my work. Those of you reading this who’re from Microsoft who really know this product and the problem : How do we fix this?

You may check the following updated document and follow the steps outlined in the article to resolve this issue. Also, recommend you to refer the article Azure VM Activation fail , which gives you different methods to resolve windows r2 license activation.

If you read my post you will notice it talks about marketplace images. So that doesn’t help me one bit. The other blog you’ve mentioned has nothing new that I haven’t tried.

Can you first tell me why this happens and what can be done now to fix it. The frustration is too much to bear for no fault of mine. Can you please also get me a new set of product keys because the ones available online do not work. Again, this is something I believe is wrong from Azure end since the expectation for a VM deployed in Azure using a marketplace image is to be activated by default. Digging this further tells me that the problem could be with the Software Protection service not being able to start.

Now why on earth would it not start? Seriously what is going on with Azure??? At this point, I suspect that the problem could’ve occurred when I promoted this VM to a DC and so had to make some changes to the network settings which is fairly routine business.

But that still doesn’t explain why this goddamn service won’t start!! Come on guys please what is going on here? Can you please reach out to us at AzCommunity microsoft.
