Joined Nov 24, Messages Hi, I went to turn my laptop on today and for some reason it wanted to do a chkdsk even though I had shut it down properly before.

I let it run but then it did another recovery process where it was recovering orphaned files not too sure what this is. I let both run and it restarted and was just about to get to the login page when it hit a BSOD. I tried rebooting in Safe Mode but to no avail as it keeps on getting stuck at Classpnp. I also tried debugging mode but it had the same BSOD. Any help would be much appreciated. I have attached the BSOD screen.

Thanks, M. Joined May 7, Messages 14, Seeing a disc check run at start up is an indication that there is a problem with the hard drive.

I would recommend you first make sure you have all your important data backed up if not already done. As you cannot get access to the files then follow the first set of instructions below using another PC to burn the disc. Then run the Seatools diagnostics to check on the health of your hard drive.

Open Internet Explorer and click on this: Seatools Save the download to your desktop. For all other versions of windows if you do not have an ISO burner download this free software. ImgBurn Install the program make sure you uncheck any boxes that will install bundled software and start the application.

Select the top left hand option to Write image file to disc and then on the next window click on the small yellow folder icon and browse to the ISO file on your desktop. Then click on the two grey discs with the arrow in between bottom left and leave it to complete the operation.

You will need a blank recordable CD or a re-recordable CD. Insert the disk in the drive then reboot and the disc will load into DOS. Click on Basic Tests and select the Long Test. A full set of instructions can be found here: Seatools instructions When the test completes it will show a Pass or Fail.

I have no access to my desktop as it won’t let me get past the login stage so I can’t run that programme I don’t think. Macboatmaster Trusted Advisor. Spam Fighter. Macboatmaster, thanks for jumping in, but I do believe the OP, when relating to ‘desktop’, is in fact talking about the Windows desktop not a desktop PC.

It states in two places in my post that you need to use another PC to create the discs for Ubuntu and Seatools. Yes it was an error in my part, I have access to another computer now to download the files. Okay so I have followed the instructions and got it to reboot to seatools for dos but it is saying “No hard drives found”. Any ideas why? Ok, were you able to access the hard drive following the first set of instructions?

No worries Macboatmaster, we all do that from time to time. Thanks – never done it before that I know of – wrong side of 65 this week – hope it is not the start of early senility. It isn’t common, but in some cases Seatools won’t detect the hard drive due to an incompatibility with system drivers and there is another version of it that can be used to overcome the problem.

On the other hand, if the Ubuntu CD, when launched, cannot see the hard drive it may well have failed completely. If that is the case and you have not kept any backups of your personal data you may have lost it all. Hi Mark, Seatools was unable to find the hard drive but I haven’t tried the Ubuntu Live CD yet as I didn’t have any discs at home however, I will burn one at work today and try it later.

Will post the results as soon as I can. Thanks for your help. Ok, just make quite certain that you follow the guide for using Ubuntu very carefully and when it first boots up you do not choose the option to install it. If it gives you access to the drive then save everything of importance to an external hard drive or DVD’s while you have the opportunity. Let me know how it goes. Would you advise running the Seatools application after or something else? As Seen On.
