There are also still no installation log files for these three updates. If the update failed because it ran while another installation was running that is dependent upon that install – which was my case – installation of SQL requred VS Sp1 and failed toward the end so I went to update, ran the install and with both mutex’s running, the Update service locked up.

I’m going to try manually downloading and installing those two updates and then re-running the SQL installation and hopefully, it will resolve the problem of the war of the mutex’s.

It sounds like a very old bug. Here is the link from that is designed to clear up that problem. Copy the following text, and then paste the text into Notepad:. I’ve had this problem for close to a month, and I’m assuming that the three that are giving me trouble aren’t the only ones released in that time frame.

I just checked this. I don’t use Outlook, so I had hidden two Outlook updates. When I ran the update process again, it only found the three trouble makers. Both Outlook updates installed just fine. The problem appears to strictly limited to the. NET Framerwork 2. The above is a similar thread.

In reply to Waseemulla Shariff’s post on June 26, Not sure what was going on, but today when I booted up, I figured I’d try Windows Update one last time before exploring the above options. Well, it now seems to be back to it’s old state. It didn’t give me an error, and it claims I still need to install the same three patches. I ran the install, it claims it was successful. My update history shows that they installed properly.

However, if I check for the individual KBnnnnn log files, they don’t exist. So, it appears I’m right back where I started from. Any suggestions? I’ve already run two different Fixits that were recommended to address this problem. In reply to Crakdkorn’s post on June 27, I haven’t had any other issues, installation failures or errors. It’s just that every day when I shut down, it tries to install the same three security patches it’s been trying to install for at least several weeks. Every time, the Windows Update system claims the install was succesful, but it never creates the log files that would support that notion. So, the next day, it tries again.

Doing it manually at the web site does the same thing. It claims the installations were successful, but if I ask it to check again, it says they still need installing.
